Chiang Mai, Thailand.
This summer I will be volunteering with GIVE, Growth International Volunteer Excursions, once again! The organization focuses on two volunteer initiatives - education and infrastructure. As volunteers, we will be assisting the teachers in various activities and lessons. From the GIVE website,
"Due to extreme isolation and the long distances that separate these rural villages, around 60 students live at the school. With a food budget of 15฿ ($0.45USD) per day per student and minimal staff, the school struggles to provide a sufficient standard of living for its boarding students. As a GIVE volunteer you will assist these local staff members while interacting and playing with the school children."
The other initiative pertains to more of the construction side of work (similar to the options when volunteering in Zanzibar). This is the description GIVE shares,
"Projects range from implementing solar powered water systems to building suspension bridges that will allow access to new farming grounds. Sustainability and Innovation represent the core competencies of our organization. As a GIVE volunteer, you will be challenged to think both critically and creatively while working alongside fellow volunteers and local tribesmen, combining age-old practices with contemporary ambitions. "
To me, this means that this isn't a set project because it depends on the progress that current volunteers are making. If they started a task but didn't finish, then it is up for the next team to complete. I'll likely stick with the education side because I make a great teacher. :)
