Wow. So much has happened in a week. I'm going to work my way back because today has been slightly traumatic. Because there are 5 days between my first GIVE group leaving and the 2nd group arriving, I am on my own for 5 days. That being said, the trip leaders Nora and Chris helped organize my trip itinerary: taxi to Kilimanjaro Airport, plane to Dar es Salaam, taxi to ferry, ferry to Zanzibar, and a taxi to Stonetown where I will stay in a guest house for 1 or 2 nights. After Stonetown I'll take a dalla dalla to Matemwe, where I will be staying until the next group arrives. Sounds crazy, right? My biggest concern was step 3: taxi to ferry. My plane planned to land at 2:15 and the ferry, which is 30 minutes from the airport, left at 3:45. And that's 30 minutes without traffic. Needless to say step 3 was not my issue; it was step 1. My taxi arrived late and I missed my flight to Kilimanjaro. I'm thankful for empathetic people because I was a hot mess, trying not to bawl like a baby. No flight and no phone. What ended up happening (after more talks with the guy from FastJet who legitimately ripped me off) was stressful. I talked to another representative from another airline and booked a flight to Zanzibar (eliminated prior steps 2,3, and 4.) Only concern here is that the place left from Arusha, where I had just come from. So, one cancelled plan ticket of 90,000, one booked ticket of 250,000, and two taxi rides totaling 140,000 I am on my way to Zanzibar! (that doesn't include my hotel costs either!). Currently, I'm sitting at the Arusha airport, waiting to board my plane that leaves in an hour. Is that stressful or what? And, this is my first time doing travel stuff by myself in a foreign country (France doesn't count because at least I knew someone there) And that has been my day thus far. I'll have much more time to write/reflect these next few days and I look forward to that time (there's so much! GAH) But, on an ending note, I'm sad to see my family go, but am starting to get excited to see my 2nd/new GIVE family soon!
No pictures needed here. But, I'd like to share that I did just write and submit a review for FastJet. I was late for my plane by 5 minutes! When in Africa, that's practically seen as early! Ugh. I'm done complaining, it was just money.
